PRELIMINARY CONTESTS
The preliminaries of the Auckland provincial amateur boxing championships were contested at the Town Hall last evening. The boxing on the whole was up to standard. The semi-finals and finals will take place to-night. Results are as follow: FLYWEIGHT C. Verrall (7.92) beat F. Armishaw (7.10) F. Pearcey (7.82) beat M. Mudgv.ay (7.8); J. McLachlan (7.51) beat A. Donovan (6.132); T. Shandley (7.91) beat K. Porteous (7.8). FEATHERWEIGHT W. Heerdegren (8.13) beat R. Xeville (S. 12); J. Arnold (8.8) beat I>. McCarthy (5.7): R. McLachlan (8.9) beat L. Bailey c;.H>i); J. McPhail (8.12) beat A. Curran (8.124); R. Agnew (8.102) beat L. London ( < 12); F. Clarkson (8.10) beat W. Heerdegren (8.13); J. McPhail (8.12) beat V. Rickards (8.9); G. Charles (10.112); J- Gardiner (11.32) beat F. Diamond (11.32); Jim Smith (10.6) beat A. Dobbs (10.12). N. Cammick (fly-weight), F. Taylor (bantam#, G. Smith (feather), R. La Rousse (welter), and J. D. Willis (middle) did not defend their titles. Smith was beaten by Wright in the light-weight class. C. Broadfoot (light-weight champion) was defeated by D. Armishaw after a close fight. Although the bouts continued until after midnight, the majority of the spectators stayed until the finish.
