500 MERCEDES A WEEK In Germany's big - industrial revival a big part is being played by motorcars. Because of the system of taxation, small cars are the more popular, there; but apparently there are still many persons who can afford big motors. The Mercedes factory is now turning out 500 cars a week. The model under such high production is the twolitre six-cylinder supercharged car, which sells in Germany for about £6OO. It is stated to be such a tremendous success that orders for it are flowing in at the rute of 10,000 a month. A Germanised version of the Austin Seven is also now being built in Germany under the name of the Dixi.
A new type of chain for tyres is being advertised in various American journals, in which the cross-links which embrace the carcase of the tyre and pass across the tread are made of tough rubber instead of steel; they are secured at their ends to a pair of steel chains which run round the rim of the wheel at each side. It is claimed that these chains ensure safety on road-s made slippery by rain and mud as well as on snow, and that they are noiselas«
