ARM SIGNALS

ASSIST INSPECTORS MOTORISTS ARE AMISS It has often been pointed out before in these columns that the traffic inspectors on points duty are not thought readers. People who have not enough sense to give signals to the men on duty should muster enough intelligence to keep out of the central area. The whole idea behind this traffic control business is the elimination of congestion, and a man or woman who

fails to give the arm signal to the inspector is obstructing the officer just “as surely as if the engine were stalled deliberately.

If you intend to go to the right:, thrust out the right hand distinctly. Nothing will bite it. Don’t dangle three fingers over the side as some women do frequently. If going right ahead thrust the right arm out and right hand in front, and do not give the impression from the front as if you were only holding on to the windscreen standard.

To signal to the left, extend the left arm and hand horizontally to the left. It is suggested in some quarters that the right hand placed horizontally across the front of the driver, neck high, should indicate the left-hand turn. Drivers, however, would need to improve greatly in signalling efficiency for such a method to be effective. The driving wheel would almost hide the signal. The inspectors on- duty will appreciate your thoughtfulness in the arm and hand signals properly given. j
