ADDITIONAL PUBLIC WORKS 400 MEN TO BE PLACED Additional public works, to absorb between 350 and 400 men, will be commenced shortly as a result of the Government’s decision to provide relief work for the unemployed. All men on the books of the Auckland Labour Bureau will have an opportunity of obtaining work. Road maintenance in the Whangarei district will require 75 men next week and other work in the Auckland Province will provide employment for 200 men. At Riverhead, the Forestry Department will take 75 men for treeplanting, and a larger number on the Kaingaroa Plains.
According to the Labour Department, nearly 400 men will commence work next week, but. although work will be provided for this number, the present lack of accommodation w’il? only allow’ the men to be absorbed gradually. Relief wages of 12s a day for married men and 9s for single men will be paid.
