WIN FOR G.N. CANDIDATE

CHARLATAN SHOWS GOOD FORM AT TIMARU

(.Special to THE SUN.) TIMARU, Saturday. The South Canterbury Hunt Club held its meeting at Washdvke to-day in dull but fine weather. The attendance was good, and the going holding. The totalisator handled £11,731 10s, against £13,745 last year. ABERFELDY AGAIN Proceedings opened with the Hadlow Hack Hurdles, for which Aberfeldy was backed right down. The Quin Abbey gelding never left the issue in doubt, and won pulling up by half a head from Guncase, who was three lengths in front of the third horse. Beauty Light. Gay Queen ran a fair race for a mile, but inexperience told against her. Goldtown never looked a winner, and finished well back in fourth place. THE BABE WINS

Royal Fashion and The Babe disputed favouritism for the Pareora Hunters’ Steeplechase. The placed horses were always well up and going nicely. Royal Fashion and The Babe had a great set to once over the last fence, but hard-ridd€*n The Babe prevailed by a long head. Mataipuke was four lengths away in third place, with Greenstone fourth. Tempter ran off the first time round at the fence at the top of the straight. Hyperion fell at the last fence, and Auburn came to grief at the double in front of the stand.

CHARLATAN SCORES HANDSOMELY

Charlatan was made a strong favourite for the South Canterbury Steeples, and from the outset he never caused his backers any anxiety. Frenchman was the first to become prominent, but Isla Bank soon ran to the f ront. Passing the stand the first time, Isla Bank and Frenchman opened up a break of 20 lengths on the field, and along the back Isla Bank, Frenchman and Charlatan showed the way to Kipling and Vice Grand, with Maungamoe last. Going out of the straight the last time Charlatan ran into second place, and along the back drew level with Isla Bank, the pair showing the way to Maungamoe, Frenchman and Vice Grand. Charlatan drew away from Isla Bank before the straight entrance was reached, and once over the last fence the Riccartontrained gelding was eased up, to win by 10 lengths from Isla Bank, who was eight lengths ahead of Vice Grand. Frenchman was fourth, followed by Kipling and Maungamoe. Charlatan won well, and gained many admirers for his National engagement. The others were badly beaten. A USEFUL SORT Cassolette and Shandre carried the confidence of backers in the Levels Hack Handicap. Cassolette was the first to begin, but Laughie soon ran to th 6 front. Across the top Laughie led Exide, Shandre, Cassolette, Dubious* and Captain Sarto. Cassolette was first into the straight from Shandre, Exide, Dubious and Laughie. Cassolette drew out a furlong from home, but Shandre challenged at the distance, and in a good finish Cassolette prevailed by a neck from Shandre, while Dubious, who finished well, was a similar distance away third, three lengths in front of Captain Sarto. JOCKEY INJURED Tilson, rider of Hyperion in the Pareora Steeplechase, received abrasions to the face, and injured an arm. when his mount came to grief. WON ALL THE WAY Tennis and Logan Princess were the favourites for the Washdyke Trot. Logan Pririfcess, driven by Withers, opened up a break early, and was never afterwards headed, winning pulling up by four lengths from Harry Locanda, with Tennis in third place. Expedient was fourth. THE HUNT CUP The Babe, Message Boy and Goodform were withdrawn from the Teschemaker Memorial Hunt Cup. The field got away to a good start, but at the initial obstacle Greenstone came to grief. Peter Marion, Royal Winks and Osterman carried on the running for a round, but along the back the last time Peter Marion drew away from Royal Wink, with Osterman in hot pursuit. Royal Wink, Peter Marion, and Osterman were together at the last fence, where Peter Marion fell. Osterman then went into the lead, and beat Royal Wink by six lengths, while Nightraid was 100 yards back third, with Happy Mac fourth. Galway fell at the jump at the top of the straight entering upon the second round. THE AMATEURS Armchair was made favourite for the Hunters’ Plate. The winner, Arcos, was always going nicely, and receiving a nice run on the rails for the major part of the journey, headed Miss Garance at the top of the straight, and drew away, to beat Hyperion by four lengths. Miss Garance was a like distance away in third place, with Armchair fourth. The rider of Armchair kept the geldling in the rear all the way till the race was practically over, and then came with a fast run on the outside. Had Armchair been ridden a different race he would have won. FORM HORSES Fairy Herald was a good favourite for the Claremont Handicap. Arrowmir was the first to begin, and led around the back from Hurdy Gurdy, Courtly Rose, Fairy Herald and Chickwheat. Fairy Herald improved his position racing across the top, and was only a length behind Arrowmir entering the straight. A furlong from home Fairy Herald went to the front, and easily holding off Fairy Tidings, who finished well, beat her home by two lengths. Carnot was a neck away in third place, with Arrowmir close up fourth. Courtly Rose war next, followed by Chickwheat and Soltoe. Thorndale was last. The winner won easily, and greatly enhanced his Winter Cup prospects.
