BRIGHTER CHEESE PROSPECTS

BUTTER SELLING SLOWLY DANISH RECOVERED The past week’s feature on the London produce market has been firmer tone in cheese sales. Danish butter has also come back to find a market up to 1625. New Zealand butter is selling slowly at practically unaltered values. Cheese prospects are generally considered good, for the near future especially, but on the question of the butter future those in touch with the Home market maintain a discreet silence. At present there is nothing to indicate lower values and, in fact, the next month or two should see the market firm up before the Southern Hemisphere output comes forward with its seasonl flush. Exporters appear to be looking for something better from the American markets this year and one leading local authority who has just concluded an exhaustive investigation of those markets, is convinced that there is further and better business to be got from that quarter. It can be seen from the London quotations that New Zealand cheese is making practically the same price as the new season’s Canadian product. MERCHANTS’ QUOTATIONS New Zealand Co-op. Dairy Co., Ltd., advises receipt of the following cable dated July 23 from its London office:—“Anchor” butter, 159 s to 160 s; unsalted to 1645. Market slow. Cheese, 89s to 90s. Under date July 23, Joseph Nathan and Co., Ltd., advise receipt of the following cable from their London house, Messrs. Trentrouse and Nathan, Ltd.:—Butter, 158 s; market weak. The European production continues heavy; the export duty on French butter was removed this week. Cheese 90s; jnarket firm. Under date July 22, Weddel and CoLtd., London, cabled A. H. Turnbull and Co., their New Zealand agents, as follow:—Butter: Danish, 158 s to 1625: New Zealand, unsalted, 160 s to 1645; salted. 156 s to 160; market slow.
