COUNTRY STORE DESTROYED BY FIRE
£4,000 DAMAGE Press Association. HAWERA, Saturday. An outbreak of fire at 10 o’clocK last night destroyed the Otakeho country store, belonging to Mr. Hubert James Eaves, causing damage estimated at £4,000. The storekeeper, who lives in an adjoining house, was away when the fire was discovered. No fire-fighting appliances were available and little could be done to check the flames or save the contents of the store. A safe containing £3O and the store books was later discovered with its contents intact. The wall of the post office, next to the store, caught fire, but it was saved by water from a pump. The insurances on the stock and store building are approximate! v £2,500.
