Admiral of the Fleet Earl Beatty has been appointed a Privy Councillor on his retirement from the position of First Sea Lord.—A. -and N.Z.-Sun. Earl Beatty was Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Fleet from November, 191 G, to 1919. He was one of the youngest men to become an admiral. He had

served with distinction in the Soudan and China. He distinguished himself greatly in the war, especially in the Battle of the North Sea, in 1916. He was promoted Admiral of the Fleet on April 2, 1919, received the Order of Merit and in August an earldom was conferred and a grant of £IOO,OOO. He was appointed First Sea Lord in October, 1919. Lady Beatty is a daughter of Mr. Marshall Field, of Chicago. The new First Sea Lord is Admiral of the Fleet Sir Charles Madden.
