No Camera Gymnastics!
German Producer’s View F. W. Murnau, the German producer of “The Last Laugh,” who recently finished “Sunrise,” for William Fox, was the principal guest at a luncheon in the Ritz-Carlton recently in New York. In a brief talk Mr. Murnau discouraged the idea of any camera gymnastics that interfered with the dramatic values of the photoplay. He was enthusiastic about America, particularly Hollywood. The Fox Film Corporation is enthusiastic about “Sunrise,” despite the fact that it is declared to be the most costly production William Fox has ever turned out. Mr. Murnau has left for Germany, where he will make another picture before returning to begin work on his five-year contract with Fox. “JUST LUCK!” HELPS IN CAREER CHARLES FARRELL’S CONFESSION “Luck,” says Charles Farrell, who figures as Chico in the film version of “Seventh Heaven.” “lias probably played a greater part in my film career than it has in those of most players. “I had heard before I went to Hollywood of the disappointments and sufferings of the unknowns who hoped for big things out of the movies. I was prepared to fight my way just as they had clone and were doing. “Much to my surprise, one day a casting director for the Fox Film Corporation picked me from the mob and gave me my first film job. I had hardly finished two days’ work as an extra when a director in search of a boy to play a football hero in “The Wings of Youth” saw me on the lot. He asked me a number of questions and I told him about my athletic activities in college. “I-Ie patted me on th® back and asked me to report to him the next day. I did and I got my first big assignment. Other roles followed in ‘Sandy,’ ‘Wings,’ ‘The Rough Riders,’ ‘Old Ironsides’ and ‘Seventh Heaven.’ You can readily see that my lot has been quite an easy one. “Luck played a big part in my success, for if I had not been picked, because of my physical build, to portray a football hero. I might yet bo standing in line each day hoping for a job as an extra.”
