Vaudevillian Amazed at Auckland’s Growth
Nasty Plays in America “The thing which surprised me most of all since I arrived is the amazing growth of Auckland,” said Mr. Phil Rich, of the Rich and Adair duo now playing with the J. C. Williamson Celebrity Vaudeville Company at His Majesty's Theatre. Mr. Rich was in New Zealand some years ago with his brother. Looking at Auckland’s waterfront from the deck cf the Marama reminded him cf San Francisco, he said. Mr. Rich also had something to say about the filthy plays which are being produced in America at present, and he endorses the action which has been taken to prevent their appearance in the theatres. Before leaving America he saw “The American Tragedy,” expecting it to be a historical drama, or at least something to do with history and drama. But it was neither. Mr. Rich said that it was a most unpleasant performance. Many companies have been arrested in the States and many plays have been refused presentation because of their nasty subjects.
