WATCHED CITY’S GROWTH SINCE 1848
LATE MR. F. W. MATTHEWS DEATH AT MOUNT ROSKILL TN the passing of Mr. Frederick W. Matthews, whose death occurred yesterday at h s home in Emma Street, Mount Roskill, Auckland loses a venerated citizen. The late Mr. Matthews came to the Waitemata in IS4S as a child of three, and grew up with the city. He watched its progress from the time when a few tents and scattered shacks formed the nucleus of a town which, in his lifetime, was destined to become a great Born in Hong Kong in 1543 Mr. Matthews came to Auckland with liis parents. He was educated at the Auckland Academy under the late Air. J. Gorrie, and later entered the service of Air. W. Morrin, where he remained for 10 years. After some time with Alessrs. Brown. Campbell and Company, he took charge of the Te Kopuru sawmills at Northern Wairoa, in IS7B. retaining the position until 18S8, when he returned to Brown, Campbell’s as manager of the Mangawhare branch. Subsequently he settled in Tatarariki, being the first man in the district to bore artesian wells. WORK AS COUNCILLOR After some years in the'timber industry he retired and took up a position as accountant to Messrs De Schryver and Company in Auckland. Mr. Alatthews was chairman of the Hobson County Council, and the first roads between Dargaville and Tatarariki were made during his term of office. Air. Matthews had been a supporter of the Methodist Church while in the Northern Wairoa, and assisted as preacher and trustee. Having been associated with the Beresford Street Congregational Church since boyhood, he was the oldest deacon of the church. He was Sunday school superintendent for many years, and only last Saturday week laid the foundation-stone of the riew Sunday school in Beresford Street. Mr. Matthews is survived by his wife, who was a daughter of Air. Alexander Black, three sons and two daughters.
