MAORI MAIDS AT WINTER SHOW

Kahupake, the Tamaki chieftainess, led the band of Maori maids who welcomed Sir Thomas Mackenzie with their pois, at the official opening of the Auckland Winter Show yesterday. Associated with her were Kahurimu, Kawe, Rina, Moera, Tetu and Sarah. Sir Thomas acknowledged the compliment, and thanked the members of Kahupake’s party. He said that such traditional welcomes should be encouraged, and appreciated the tribute the natives had paid him as the representative of the Prime Minister, Mr. Coates.
