NO BOTANIC GARDENS
AUCKLAND’S LACK “COSTLY UNDERTAKING” A UCKLAND Has the unique distinction, if it can be so termed, of being one of the few cities of importance in the world minus a botanic garden. This fact was recently pointed out to the Parks Committee of the City Council by a representative deputation in quite forceable language. When this matter was brought up at the council meeting last night, however, the chairman of this committee, Cr. Brinsden, said: “The proposals of the deputation would be very costly if carried out. A staff of eight or ten men would be required. The council could not alone carry the burden unless the other local bodies, and the Government, gave assistance.” A recommendatln from the committee that the question of a botanic garden should be referred to the forthcoming meeting of local body authorities was referred back for further consideration.
