TOUCHING HIS POCKET
INSTEAD OF PROBATION COURT SHOWS LENIENCY (From Our Own Correspondent.) HAMILTON, To-day. “The probation officer’s report is not very satisfactory in this case,” commented Mr. Wyvern W ilson, S.M., in the Hamilton Police Court this morning, when Leslie James appeared for sentence upon a charge of theft of motor number-plates. “Inquiries at Ohaupo disclose the fact that you are locked upon as a hoodlum. It may not be altogether your own fault, because to a certain extent your early training has not been what it should have been. Your honesty has never been called into question before, and for that reason I’m not going to impose a long term of probation, but I am going to touch your pocket. Probably that’s the best way.” His Worship then imposed a fine of £5, with 30s costs, in default one month’s imprisonment.
