League Rugby Has a Day Off
STOP-GAP GAMES TO-MORROW DEVONPORT AND ATHLETIC CLASH To-morrow will be an “off" day in League Rugby, Carlaw Park having been given over to the Soccer Test match. Followers of the 13-aside code at the North Shore will, however, have an opportunity of seeing their team in action against Athletic, while Ponsonby and Newton teams will make trips into the country, Ponsonby going to Rotorua and Newton down the Waikato. The game between Devonport and Athletic was to have been played at the Domain last Saturday, but owing to the state of the ground it had to be postponed. The Rugby League
has, however, made good use of this week's break in the competition to bring these two teams up to date.
The game between these two teams in the first round was also played at the Shore, and resulted in the home side putting up a big score, but the visitors were compelled to play a man short owing to a misunderstanding. Shore lias put up some good games this season, and is still in the running for the championship, while Athletic has been battling along with a young and promising team without having won a match, but nevertheless the team is still confident that its turn will come, and at least can always be depended to put up a good game and to give it a “go” to the finish. SHORE’S ACCIDENT LIST Shore has had a bad run this season with accidents, etc. Preston, the half, had his ankle broken some time ago, and then “Scowey” Dixon met with an injury to his knee and is still in a bad way, while O’Brien had the misfortune to meet with the disapproval of the referee and has to stand down this week-end. Athletic, on the other hand, has not had the best of luck, not having had a game for the last three weeks, owing to ground condition, and also having the bye in between. This team tried out several new players the last time it was out. There was only one who showed promise, and the selectors were pleased to find a good winger, but this man has had to leave the town to get work. Angelo, the promising young fiveeighth, will be missing from the game for a while owing to an accident during the week. This is a pity, as this boy is showing good form. Shore should have no difficulty in defeating the visitors, but the spectators will at least see a fast, open game as both teams are always fit and well, and both play football for the game’s sake.
