HORSE OR PONY RACING
MAROUBRA SPEEDWAY CONCERN IN SYDNEY If it succeeds in its application to vary the conditions of lease, will Maroubra Speedway, Ltd., conduct horse or pony racing? “No," says Alfred William Anderson, chairman of directors. “At the present moment it is not in our minds. But I cannot; say what others will do in the future.” Application by Maroubra Speedway, Ltd., Sydney, to the Metropolitan Land Board is to alter the conditions of the special lease by deleting the clause prohibiting horse and pony racing. In April, the Chief Secretary approved the issue of a licence to permit the company holding trotting meetings at Maroubra. TRACK FOR TROTTING It is proposed to spend from £40,000 to £60,000 in making the track suitable for trotting, and in the erection of buildings. “But,” said Mr. Anderson, “we want to know where we stand. “We have been told the clause we want to delete might, if it stands, prevent the company from holding trotting meetings.” STRONG OBJECTION Mr. Maughan, K.C.: “Will you tell the board that, if your application succeeds, you will not use the Speedway for horse racing?”—“l am not prepared to say.” “But, if you do succeed, your directors will consider themselves at liberty to use it for either trotting, horse racing, or pony meetings, won’t they?” Objections to the proposal were lodged by Llie Victoria Park Racing Club, Associated Racing Clubs, grand council of the progress associations of South Rand wick, the Maroubra Baptist Church, Ascot and Kensington Recreation Grounds, Ltd., St. John’s Church, Maroubra, and several private individuals.
