FREE LEGAL DEFENCE FOR MOTORISTS
A.A.A.’S NEW SCHEME TRAFFIC LAW BREACHES Free legal defence against any charge of breach of the "traffic laws will henceforward be supplied by the Auckland Automobile Association to its financial members. THE gravity of the breach or the strength of the defence available, it was decided, should not be reckoned. The privilege will be free to all. During the past year 16 members of the association had been provided with defence at a fiat rate of half-a-guinea each, the secretary, Mr. G. W. Hutchinson, explained. To extend the privilege free would cost under £IOO a year. Flagrant breaches should not be defended, said Mr. R. T. Michaels. Another member asked who was to decide whether a man was innocent or guilty before the court had investigated the case. To deny any man defence might be to do an injustice. Several members condemned drunken drivers and road-hogs, but amendments excluding these from the privilege were lost and the motion to defend all members was carried.
