FAKED PAY-SHEETS
RAILWAY CLERK’S THEFTS COMMITTED FOR SENTENCE Press Association. WANGANUI, Wednesday. Gilbert Michael Joseph McGrath, an ex-Government railway clerk at Ohakune, pleaded guilty in the Police Court to-day on a charge of theft of £126 3s lid while in the employ of the Railway Department. The accused was in the district engineer’s office, and the money was stolen at various periods between December, 1924, and July, 1926. His method was to fake the time sheets, pay sheets, etc., and to draw \tfhges purporting to be for casual workers employed on the Ohakune section. The defalcations were discovered by some officers from Wellington, who were inquiring into another matter. The accused exonerated other railway servants from blame, and said that the reason he stole was that he was short of money at the time.
He was committed to the Wanganui Supreme Court for sentence.
