A tragic fate befell Joseph Shepherd, a traffic inspector in the employ of the Railway Department, at 7 p.m. yesterday. He was returning to Invercargill on a motor-trolley, when the vehicle left the rails while crossing the bridge over the Waihopai Stream. Mr. Shepherd wathrown into the water.

Two boys who heard the splash said they believed they saw his bdy being carried down stream, but so far a search by the police and railway officers has been fruitless.
