LECTURE TO W.E.A. ‘'Shakespeare by the fire of his genius imparted fresh life and now meaning to an old story,” said the Rev. W. Jellie in a lecture to W.E.A. students last evening. The lecturer was referring to the
origin of ‘‘As You Like It.” which was founded on a 16th Century novel by Lodge. ‘•The charge of plagiarism has often been levelled against Shakespeare.” said the lecturer, ‘‘but the fact that most of his plots were taken from tales j and legends current in his time is not. j in my opinion, at all derogatory to his genius, which transformed the common j materials upon which he worked into those masterpieces of literature we now ' possess.”
