YOUNG MAN A&WdS OHLT COMMITTED FOR SENTENCE “"DUT for the prevalence of this ““■''class of crime I’m sure this young man would get probation,” said Mr. J. J. Sullivan in the Police Court this morning. The young man, George Henry McDowell, aged 22, pleaded guilty to charges of forgery, obtaining goods and money by means of valueless cheques, and breaking and entering the shop of Herbert Reginald Hansen, Dominion Road. Mr. Hansen said that his shop was entered on July 9 and a book of cheque forms taken. A sum of 9s was also missing. Evidence was given that accused had tendered a bad cheque for £lO 10s to the Farmers’ Trading Company, PUpakura, and received a pair of boots and £8 odd in change. Counsel, in applying for bail, said that accused admitted all charges, but there were special 'circumstances that might warrant probation. McDowell was committed to the Supreme Court, for sentence.
