STOLE A SHEEP TO STOCK HIS LARDER
WORKLESS MAN’S LAPSE Charged with stealing a ewe, valued at 30s, at Warkworth, HayMcKean, S.M., at the Police Court ward McKay, a labourer, aged 30, pleaded guilty before Mr. W. R. this morning, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. Selwyn Morrison, a Warkworth farmer, said that between June 6 and 13 he was in Auckland on holiday. On returning home he discovered footmarks and sheep tracks leading from his property to accused’s place nearby. He made inquiries, with Constable Snow, and found a freshly-dug patch on McKay’s property, Digging on the spot revealed the remains of a ewe. The head and pelt were intact, and one ear bore witness’s distinguishing mark. Accused submitted a statement admitting the offence. He said he was a married man, and had formerly worked for the Rodney County Council. He stole the sheep for food, as he was out of work, and when arrested he was in Auckland seeking a job.
