SPEED DOGS’ LATEST

MANY NUKUMAIS IN MINIATURE RACE OVER HURDLES

In Sydney they are now training dogs over hurdles, so we may read in the near future of a doggies’ Grand National. Over a thousand persons watched, the greyhound trials at Epping racecourse, reports the Sydney “Sun” of a few days ago. It was a full-dress rehearsal, and no fewer than 14 trials were decided, including two over brush obstacles. The jumping''events were particularly interesting. The obstacles were surmounted by broom millet, and measured 2ft. Gin. in height. Six dogs were engaged in each trial, and most of them showed a decided aptitude for the business. The first was won by a fawn dog by Young Concrete, owned by Mr. S* Guinery, which gave a faultless exhibition of fencing. LIKE A SWALLOW The first display was easily eclipsed by Battery Lad, which won the second in hollow style. He skimmed the first obstacle like a swallow, and when it is stated that the distance from the take-off’ to the landing mark was in the vicinity of 30ft., it will be seen that the power a greyhound is capable of putting into a leap is remarkable. As good as Battery Lad is. however, there is another dog which is considered to be his superior. This is Ale Rejected, which has already won two events on the flai. One of Ale Rejected’s leaps measured 35ft.! It is safe to predict that the hurdle events will be most popular on account of the spectacular nature of ttie race. ON THE Ft*AT The flat trials were mostf interesting, most of the dogs which £.re already well known to Epping being engaged. Cecilia, a winner recently won cleverly by a narrow margix?. while Peter, a recent winner, ran cfean away and won by about 25 lengths. Lord Andrew*, which has won at his last two starts, also had a run-avxay victory. Nearest to him was a nice little fawn bitch, a sister to Mantalla, *vhich shows promise. Other winners were Glory Box, Boon. Fortune Hunter (Connie White second). Dominion, Foam and the Andrew Micawber bitch, Native Rose, which won very easily. The charity meeting originally set down for July 14 will not be held until July 19. A half-mile race will be included In the next programme. Ten bookmakers have each subscribed 10 guineas for a gold cup, which will be presented to the association for disposal as it thinks fit.
