KAITOKE FOR AUCKLAN D.— The local office of the Union Company has been advised that the steamer Kaitoke leaves Newcastle to-morrow for Auckland, and is due here on July 26. ENGINEERING FEAT.— -One of the greatest feats in dock engineering ever attempted in Europe culminated in Hooding the new Gladstone series of docks at Liverpool, covering 50 acres, with 3t million tons of water from the River Mersey. The new docks will lake premier place as the finest and best equipped system in the world. The filling of the docks occupied a week, for it could only' be performed at high tide, and under very careful supervision. The engineers decided they would only be able to take 4ft. of water at each of 14 tides, which had been kept back from the sea wall by a huge dam. The entrance lock is so constructed that not only will the largest vessels afloat and even the contemplated giants of the future be able to pass safely through at high tide, but except at exceptionally “dead low" water, in the spring tide period, it will be possible to lock in vessels drawing 28ft. of water at any time of the day or night. The docks, when completed, will add a further 2J miles of quays to the port. The cost of the new dock system £8,000,000. The weekly wages bill has averaged £9,000.
