WORLD’S LARGEST DOCK
COMPLETED AT LIVERPOOL WATER AREA OF 58 ACRES KING TO OPEN IT British Wireless. — Copyright. RUGBY, Monday. Their Majesties King George and Queen Mary, who removed with their Court to Edinburgh last week, concluded their official visit to Scotland yesterday. They will break their return journey to London at Liverpool, where the King will to-morrow open the Gladstone dock, the largest in the world. The new dock has a water area of over 58 acres. It is ringed by three miles of granite-faced quays, on which huge warehouses have been erected. It has cost more than £7,500,000. It is situated at the extreme north end of Liverpool’s seven lineal miles of docks, with their 37 miles of quays. Nearly 2,500 men have been employed for many years in creating the new docks on a site which w*as formerly waste land. The first section of the largest dry dock in Europe took seven years to complete. It was opened by the King in 1913.
The Royal party will steam direct into the new dock to-morrow. Their vessel will snap a silver ribbon which will be stretched across the entrance. Immediately after the opening ceremony one of the largest Atlantic liners will enter from the river, to be the first ocean-going vessel to berth in the new dock. —A. and N.Z.
