MAJESTIC

“THE SCARLET LETTER” Absolutely the greatest ovation ever given at the Majestic was accorded the Majestic’s new orchestra last night. The applause at the conclusion of the magnificent rendering of the “Zampa” overture was deafening. An encore was given, which again brought forth a thunder of acclamation, resulting in a second encore by the orchestra. All over Auckland listeners-in ring the Majestic management, congratulating it on the new orchestra, and saying they had never heard such a fine musical programme over the wireless before. The large audience was also delighted with “The Scarlet Letter,” the gigantic Metro-Goldwyn epic, starring Lillian Gish. “The Scarlet Letter” is one of the most dramatic of screen productions yet seen in Auckland, To Lillian Gish goes chief honour for the success of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s story. She reveals great depth of feeling in the character she impersonates. The story of the girl who loved with every fibre of her being is as gripping as is the splendid manner in which the grim customs of the early days of the Puritans have been reconstructed for the screen. Miss Gish is supported by the splendid acting of Lars Hanson, a Swedish film discovery. while the othei’ characters have been just as carefully selected.
