SURGERY AT SEA

CHIEF OFFICER OPERATES WAIPAHI’S CAPTAIN ILL During the outward voyage of the Union Company’s fruit steamer Waipahi to the Cook Islands, the master, Captain G. A. Grey was taken ill, and was operated on by the chief officer, Mr. J. D. Lundie. When the vessel arrived at Rarotonga, Captain Grey was removed to the hospital, where he is still a patient. Mr. Lundie assumed command and the other officers were moved up a step accordingly. When the Waipahi left Rarotonga Captain Grey was progressing satisfactorily and well on the way to recovery. Captain Grey’s illness was due to blood poisoning setting in from a boil.
