KAWARAU RIVER RISES

FROSTS AND THAWING DUNEDIN, Tuesday. The Kawarau River has now reached the highest level since the gates were closed, being now only 6in below the level of the day previous to the closing. All last week it was too high for successful work, but a hard frost late last week was sending it to a favourable level. There was a sudden change on Saturday, followed by two days’ thaw and rain in some quarters. This morning there was another hard frost, but even under these conditions the river will be some days falling. The flood water is evidently coming from the feeders.
