USE A LIGHT CAR
LIVE WHERE YOU WISH EXPENSES AND SAVINGS The opinion has often been expressed by a prospective home-builder that he would readily live in one of the outer suburbs and purchase a small car for traveling to and from the city, but for the excessive cost of motoring. That running a small car is an expensive hobby is a firmly-held belief, but one that has probably not been Questioned Let anyone work the question out
for themselves. An ordinary light car uurchased brand new can be obtained ;it any price all the way between £ 150 ind £3OO. But a good second-hand one can be bought for probably less than £IOO. down to «bout £SO. Assuming that a car in fair running >rder is purchased for £BO a conservative estimate of its life would be that •it least five vears' use could be ob lamed befo - it was so useless that f would have to go on the scrapheap -that is to say. its capital cost would £l6 a year of use. Assuming agair that n did 20 miles to the gallon (probably more), that benzine cost 2s a gallon and that vou lived five miles out of town Running expenses would be roughly is a day Oil and tyres (bearing in mind concrete roads) would scarcely be 6d a day or in all the cost would not be greatly in excess of ordinary ransport fares over five miles The first objection that will be made this, of course Is that the cost of he car has been rated too low Even issuming the cost to be three times that given, however, i.e.. £240 and that this better car only lasts as long as the other (although a new car could be purchased for the sum named i the capital cost is still under £1 a week, and with reductions in running expenses. This brief survey will be sufficient to indicate that the purchase of a small light car is a proposition worth considering. especially as it will enable one to live so much further out of town that the cheaper districts can be reached. The cost of the car can be saved from the reduced cost of the land.
