Charges of “Ringing In”
The Promenade Case
New Zealand Trotting Mare
THE men remanded from Auckland to Sydney, on charges of defrauding Australian trotting bodies by running the New Zealand mare Promenade under the name of “Gathered Gold,” are on trial in the Sydney Police Court,
By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright Reed. noon. SYDNEY, To-day. A T the Central Police Court, William Mattersou and Walter McCarthy were charged with conspiring together to cheat and defraud the Richmond Trotting Club and the New South Wales, Victorian and West Australian Trotting Associations of large sums of money. It was alleged that the trotting mare registered in Australia as “Gathered Cold” was identical with the New Zealand mare Promenade.
Two racing officials identified the liorse as the one nominated by Matterson in the name “Gathered Gold.” A detective gave evidence that when he interviewed McCarthy at Auckland the latter told him that he sold Promenade to his brother-in-law, that the horse had died and that he had purchased Gathered Gold from Matterson and run it in Victoria and West Australia. He said he then sold the horse for £SO.
