JULY FLOODS IN MANUKAU COUNTY

MINOR DAMAGE CAUSED Despite the heavy rains throughout the district in the early part of July, serious damage was not occasioned in the Manukau county. In his report to the Manukau County Council this morning, the engineer, Mr. J. R. Page, reported that heavy rains on July 1 caused floods and washouts in various parts of the county. None, however, were very serious in effect, although some expense would be incurred through reinstatements. It was stated that Bull’s bridge, on the Papakura-Clevedon Road, was badly scoured at the approaches, and a bridge near Cashmore’s. on the Kawakawa-Orere Road, was shifted, and rendered impassable. It was also reported that, of the Highways Board’s quota of cost (total £21,850), £19,000 had been authorised, and £12,000 paid. An application for a further payment has been made.
