MONEY NEEDED FOR MEDICAL RESEARCH
THE TRAVIS BEQUEST Frcaa Association. CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. In connection with the Travis bequest, and medical research. Sir Louis Barnett, emeritus professor of surgery at the Otago University, says that money for purposes of medical research has long been a crying need in New Zealand. “Medical research is costly,” he says, “and although much has been done in the Dominion, particularly at the Otago Medical School, the work has been sadly hampered owing to lack of funds. Our Government is sympathetic, but its financial contribution is a mere bagatelle compared with what is really and urgently needed. “I have now retired from practice, so that 1 feel at greater liberty to work, and to write in the lay Press on matters of public welfare, and I would ike the people of New Zealand to ;now that the Dunedin Medical School (which, be it remembered, is a Dominion and not a local institution), is ioing its best, though, perforce, in a frugal fashion, to help not only in cancer and tuberculosis campaigns, but in many other problems of vital imoortance to the community. “All that is wanted for further development of successful research is money—more money to pay salaries and provide? equipment. If, therefore, in the wisdom of the trustees, part of the Travis bequest should be devoted to research work at the Otago University, the public may rest assured that the money will be well invested.”
