N.Z. METROPOLITAN AUGUST FIXTURE
NATIONAL CUP WILL PROVIDE GOOD TEST FOR N.Z. CUP HORSES The New Zealand Metropolitan Club has every reason to feel pleased with the response received from owners for the August fixture, which has the distinction of ushering in the 1927-28 season. Over 630 entities were received for the 24 events, giving a highly satisfactory average of 26 horses per race. Apart from the numerical strength of the entries, class is represented in the highest degree and practically all the Dominion’s crackajack pacers and trotters are engaged. The presence of several Auckland representatives will add to the interest in the gathering in this district, and although it is doubtful if they will be forward enough in condition, a few of them promise to show up prominently before the fixture concludes. NATIONAL CUP The National Cup, which is the recognised “king pin” event of the carnival, despite the fact that it is worth no more than the principal heat on the first and second days, has drawn a large response, 25 high-grade horses, who have either tramped 4.29 for 1C furlongs or have been considered equal to such a task by the handicapper, appearing in the list. What a race can be looked forward to with such a wealth of speed tapering from the limit back to that great horse Great Bingen, with his place record of 4.19 2-5. N.Z. CUP HORSES ENGAGED
Besides the migthy Nelson Bingen horse, such classy cup customers as Waitaki Girl, Man-o’-War, Great Hope, Talaro, Ahuriri, Peter Bingen, Logan Chief, Locanda Mac, Sea Pearl, Queen’s Own, Escapade, Imprint, Loganwood and Cardinal Logan have been accorded an entry, and the meeting of some of these will throw a light on their New Zealand Cup prospects. Other candidates for the big honours in November, Jack Potts, Black Admiral, Kohara, Away and Native Chief, figure in the speedy sprint heats. TRIO WITH POSSIBILITIES There are also a few engaged in the National Cup, and the preceding big two-mile events, that, provided the going is suitable, promise to get within the New Zealand Cup time limit conditions. The most noticeable of this division is perhaps the ex-Australian pacer ConclilTe, from whom big things are expected, and Tomkinsori’s charge will make a bold bid to reach the tophole class. The brilliant trotter Peterwah will also make a bold bid for cup distinction, while the pacer Audacious is apt to go anything when thoroughly wound up. SPEEDY SPRINTERS There will be some great racing witnessed also in the sprint events, which have drawn the cream of the dashv pacers, in both saddle and harness heats. With such proved speed merchants as Nelson Fame, Lady Dunmore, Author Jinks, Logan Holme, Harold Thorpe, Fight Ever. Golden Devon, Jewel Pointer, Auguste Dillon, Final McKinney, Bell Harold, Bonnv Logan and Bessie Logan, in addition to several of the big two-milers alreadv mentioned, the short distance heats will be brimful of interest. SQUARE GAITERS Lovers of the unhoppled horse will have plenty of scope for interest, as some of the best in the land are included in the lists. The trotting queen, Escapade, the handsome and speedy Peterwali, and the solid Peter Swift arc down to tackle the pacers and will not disgrace themselves in their mission. In events confined to the unhoppled division will be found such stout performers as Moneyspider, Napland, Audominion. Trampfast, Herbilyn and Great Bell, as well as the crack-a-jack trotters previously enumerated. TROTTING FIXTURES event) 21 —Waimate Hunt Annual (one July 23—South Canterbury Hunt (one event.)
