ONEHUNGA BOROUGH

MEETING OF COUNCIL Mr. W. C. Coldicutt, Mayor, presided over an ordinary meeting of the Onehunga Borough Council last evening, when there was a full muster of members. Onehunga Lands Company is to be asked to contribute £7OO toward the cost of draining its property at Te Papapa. The council cannot see its way clear to grant the use of the Blockhouse in Jellicoe Park for a kindergarten school; but has offered to grant a site for the same at the corner of Arthur, Hill and Harbour View Streets, at a peppercorn rental for 32 years, provided a suitable building is started within 12 months. The council agreed to supply Mount Roskill with water at rates reduced from Is to lOd per 1,000 gallons, thus bringing the price level to that charged by the One Tree Hill Road Board. The provision of a larger main to secure an increased pressure was left to the consideration of a committee. Mr. W. J. Jordan, M.P. for Manukau, wrote that the Onehunga Borough Empowering Bill had been received, and he awaited instructions. It transpired that the Bill sought to take a poll of the district with the view to creating a flat scale of rating throughout the borough, including the cost now falling upon Te Papapa for drainage. The council decided that Mr. Jordan be informed that they did not wish him to proceed with the Bill. Permission was granted to the Manukau Lodge of Freemasons to park motor-cars outside the hall in Princes Street until midnight without lights. During June 15 building permits were issued by the council, involving an expenditure of £11,980, and 22 alterations and additions at £1,337. It was unanimously resolved that the site of the new destructor should be at the rea# of Messrs. Parker and Lamb’s timber mill at the corner of Mill and Albert Streets, and that the work of construction be proceeded with immediately -sanction from the Health Department is obtained.
