LAUNCH “PALOMA”

LATEST ADDITION TO FLEET Designed by Wm. H. Hand specially for the owner, W. E. Sinclair, and built by Col. Wild, of Stanley Bay. Paloma is a modern “V” bottomcruiser, with a length of 36ft and beam of 9ft Sin. She has 6ft 6in headroom throughout and is powered with a 40-60 h.p. Daimler engine, in which many new ideas are incorporated. The engine will be oil-cooled, and means are provided for controlling the temperature of the cylinders. Dial type thermometers are fitted to various parts of the engine, and indicate on a special instrument panel. A tachometer and helm indicator are also being fitted. The engine is equipped with a Zangdom silencer, and a special vibration damper. Steering will be by telemotor. An electric capstan is at present under construction, and an electric bilge-pump and fans are also being installed, together with other electric devices.

As may be expected, a specially large generator is being fitted to cope

with the heavy demands that such a large installation will make, and special meters will keep a check on the amount of current used. The whole of the electrical gear was built by the owner in Auckland. One of the new “Campbell-Bennett” dead-heat compasses (the only one in use outside the Navy) is being fitted in this launch. The ventilators also are a new departure, being treated by the chromium process—no polishing being necessary. The anchors are being made to order by Messrs. Byers, Ltd., of Sunderland, who make practically all the anchors for the Royal Navy. Fresh water under pressure, and a four-burner benzine stove complete the equipment of this most modern launch. DEATH OF MR. S. R. SPEIGHT General regret is expressed in yachting circles at the death of Mr. Sidney Rhodes Speight, at the Auckland Hospital on Saturday. The late Mr. Speight was well known as the Auckland Anniversary Regatta Committee’s timekeeper for the last 20 years. He also acted in the same capacity at Nortlicote and Birkenhead regattas. His son, Mr. S. R. Speight, is rearcommodore of the Ponsonby Cruising Club, and owns WairikL
