FIREMAN’S WITNESS A BROKEN REED
THEFT DEFENCE FAILS When William John Evans, a ship’s fireman, was charged with theft at the Police Court on Saturday, he asked the magistrate’s leave to call a witness who would clear his name. The witness let him down badly this morning. TUVANS was charged with stealing a hat valued at 6s 6d, and an overcoat valued at £6 6s. The new witness was then called. He stepped into the box, and Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., asked him what he knew about the case. ‘'Well,” re replied confidentially, “I was so drunk I don’t remember going on board.” The magistraee (to accused): Your witness hasn’t helped you. Evans was fined £1 on each charge and ordered to make £6 restitution within one month, in default one month’s imprisonment.
