£500,000 For Tramways
Loan Will Provide Employment
!F the tramways and bus transport development loan is sanctioned by Auckland city ratepayers, at least 100 additional men will be employed in connection with the coachbuilding proposals alone.
TTNLESS the city council can place some capital works in hand 150
men will be dismissed by September. A considerable number of tramways
men have been retained by expending money on maintenance work in the hope that the position will be relieved by the loan proposals. The City Council will probably authorise the advertising of the proposed loan of £500,000 at Thursday night’s meeting, according to the chairman of the Tramways Committee, Mr. J. A. C. Allum. In all probability the loan will be placed before the ratepayers in a month’s time. 50 NEW TRAMCARS The proposals include the construction of 50 additional tramcars and some new bus depots, including one capable of accommodating 100 vehicles, to replace the existing garages at Onehunga and St. Mark’s Road; extensions of the tramways in many quarters of the city and suburbs, notably in Point Chevalier, Remuera, Mount Eden, Dominion Road, Edendale, Onehunga and Freeman’s Bay; connecting tracks to relieve the congestion at the Queen Street-Custom Street junction, a loop to the new railway station, and a Stanley Street parking loop to avoid main line traffic up Parnell Rise, when Carlaw Park crowds are being handled. It is believed that the proposals will be placed before citizens on a “straight-out” issue. Mr. Allum says it would be unfortunate if some sections of the scheme were authorised and others rejected.
