RACING AT TRENTHAM
SUCCESSFUL MEETING ENDS—NUKUMAI COMPLETES TREBLE WELLINGTON, Saturday. The Wellington Racing Club’s winter meeting was concluded to-day in cold weather, with a threat of rain in the late afternoon. As the result of a hard frost the racetrack was very holding. Nukumai received a great reception when he returned to scale after his win in the Winter Hurdles. After passing the post in the Onslow Handicap, Sun Up, the winner, broke down badly and his rider unsaddled on the course, walking back with the saddle to weigh in. Sun Up was sub-, sequently destroyed. There was a large attendance and the totalisator handled £63,395 10s. The total fof the three days was £147,973, as against. £158,489 10s last year, a decrease of £10,516 10s. Kaikahu Improves _ln the Talavera Hack Hurdles tlie favourites were Aberfeldy, Potoanui, Relic, and Kaikahu. Ramblin’ Kid and York Abbey went out at a fast clip, and at the mile were several lengths clear of Relic, Peshwa, Guncase and Bevis, the field being very strung out. Potoanui and Aberfeldy both improved their positions along the back, and approaching the straight Ramblin’ Kid was in charge from Peshwa, York Abbey and Guncase, who were just ahead of Kaikahu, Aberfeldy and Potoanui. A fine finish ensued, in which the leaders faded, and Kaikahu won by two lengths from Potoanui, who beat the hard-ridden Aberfeldy by a head. Guncase, Peshwa, York Abbey and Ramblin’ Kid were next. Subdivision Dead Heats There were no scratchings for the Novice Handicap, and of the field of ten the Aucklander, Subdivision, was a good favourite, with Walt2:er, Cerf, and Thurnus well backed. Subdivision went out of the barrier very smartly, and led on to the course proper from Ladykiller, Arrow Boy and Cerf. Subdivision \yas still in charge at; the distance, but Ladykiller finished very strongly, and wearing him down got up in time to dead heat. Cerf was two lengths away third, Waltzer fourth, and Thurnus fifth. Anolo All The Way The dozen acceptors went to the post in the Novice Handicap, and of these the favourites were Te Kawana and Royal Head, with Fairy Tidings, Romantic and Anolo all well backed. As soon as the field settled down Anolo showed out with Romantic, Highflown, Merle and Horomea following in the order mentioned. Anolo was still in charge crossing the top, and his nearest attendants were Highflown and Te Kawana, with Romantic, Merle and Royal Head next. Anolo led into the straight from Romantic, Highflown and Merle. Challenges were issued, but Anolo kept his lead and won by a length from Romantic, who beat Merle by half a length. Fairy Tidings was fourth, and then came Rowley, Close Fire, Royal Head and Horomea.
Nukumai Wins Great Race Nukumai, Wharncliffe and Kawini were the best backed of the field for the Winter Hurdles. It was a great race all the way. Perle- de Leon was the first to show out, and led from Beau Cavalier, Lady Passenger and Captain Sarto, but before reaching the straight Beau Cavalier drew out and he led past the stands from Captain Sarto, Lady Passenger, Ngata and Nukumai. Seven furlongs from home Beau Cavalier was still in front, with Kawini next, then Nukumai. and Captain Sarto, while Perle de Leon was last, and Wharncliffe was well back. Beau Cavalier led across the top from Kawini. Lord Star and Nukumai, and there was no change at the entrance to the straight. Nukumai took charge at the last hurdle, and though Wharncliffe challenged he could not get up, Nukumai winning by two lengths. Perle de Leon, who finished on again under punishment was third, and Lord Star fourth. After these came Kawini, Ngata, Vexatious, Captain Sarto and Beau Cavalier. Nukumai, having won a treble at the meeting, got a great reception, and so did his rider, who was on him in all his victories.
Fairy Herald’s Oats The whole of the 11 acceptors went to the post for the Winter Oats Handicap. King Lu was the actual favourite, slightily better backed than Indian Sage, while Master Doon and Fairy Herald also had big support. Passionate and Mint Leaf got the worst of the start, and the first to show out were Royal Mint and Indian Sage, with Master Doon and Rouex handy. Fairy Herald and Mint Leaf improved their positions between the five and six-furlong posts, and crossing the top Royal Mint and Indian Sage were together, ahead of Mint Leaf, Fairy Herald, Master Doon, Rouex and King Lu. Rouex led into the straight from Indian Sage and Fairy Herald, and from there Fairy Herald came away and won easily by four lengths from Master Doon, while Passionate finished on in third place, and Indian Sage was fourth. King Lu was close behind the placed horses, and Royal Mint and Rouex were next. Tuki in Tight Finish Tuki was always favourite for the July Steeplechase Handicap, but there was big support for Cartoon, and a fair degree of support for Zircon. Zircon went to the front as soon as the field was started on its three-mile journey, and crossing the stand double the first time he was well clear of Omahu, Royal Abbey and Tuki. with San Fort and Dick following, and Taitaiata tailed off. Along the back Zircon had a long lead, and Taitaiata fell at the post and rails, and Zircon and Cartoon lost ground shortly afterwards through bad jumps. Crossing the stand double the second time Zircon was a dozen lengths in front of Tuki, Dick and Omahu. Tuki ran up into second pla.ee a mile from home, Dick and Omahu were next, and the others were in a hopeless position. Zircon led across the top, but Tuki was reducing the gap, and not much separated them at the entrance to the straight. Zircon was first over the last fence, but in a hard finish Tuki got up and beat him by a nose in a slogging finish. Dick was hall' a dozen lengths away third. Omahu a poor fourth, Royal Abbey fifth and Cartoon sixth. San Forte was pulled up with a round, to go. Sun Up Wins, and Breaks Fetlock Solrose, Delightment and Arpent' were the favourites for the Onslow Handicap. Oration led on to the course proper from Solrose and Delightment, and was still in front a furlong from home, where Sun Up finished fast and won by nearly a length from Oration, with Delightment third and Solrose fourth. Then came Deluge and Royal Game. Sun Up appeared to break a fetlock just after passing the post and he was subsequently destroyed. Royal Land Gets Home Duke Abbey and Dehier were favourites in the concluding event, the Kia Ora Hack. Duke Abbey led on to the course proper from Denier, but Royal Lanl cut both down, to win by a length from Denier, with Duke Abbey two lengths away, third. Waltzer was fourth, and Bronstell fifth.
