SOUTHERN CROSS RETURNS.— After a three months’ cruise in the South-west Pacific, the Melanesian Alission steamer Southern Cross returned to Auckland yesterday morning and berthed at Central Wharf. The vessel left Auckland on April 8 with the launch Mavis in tow. Fine weather prevailed during . the voyage to Vila, which she reached in seven days. The cruise to the mission stations was interrupted owing to an outbreak of measles in the Solomon Group, and in consequence the steamer had to undergo two periods of quarantine. She sailed from Vila on July 9, and during the return Voyage to Auckland boisterous westerly weather and rough beam seas were encountered, and caused the vessel to roll heavily, much to the discomfort of those on board. A two months’ stay will be made in port, and then the vessel will make another cruise to the islands.
WAITE MAT A IN PORT.—An arrival at Auckland yesterday morning was the Union Company’s transpacific cargo steamer Waitemata, from Pacific Coast ports, with cargo for discharge at Auckland, Napier, Wellington, Melbourne, and Sydney. The vessel berthed at the King’s Wharf to land the local portion of her cargo. The Waitemata loaded her cargo at Vancouver, Powell River, Ocean Falls, Chemainus, and San Francisco, and cleared the latter port on June 21. Fair weather generally was experienced until the beginning of last week, when the vessel ran into strong westerly gales, and high head seas, which buffeted her considerably, and consequently delayed her arrival at Auckland by two days. The Waitemata is expected to leave here at 5 p.m. tomorrow for Napier in continuation of her voyage. Captain W. W. Hender is in command, and the following are the officers: Chief, Mr. A. MacDonald; second, Air. J. W. Thomson; third, Air. J. Macneil; chief engineer, Air. C. AI. Pirie; second. Air. N. F. Fleming; third, Air. J. B. Berryman; fourth. Air. J. Dalziel: wireless operator, Air. D. S. Bell; chief steward, Air. A. N. Thorne.
PLEIODGN’S ROUGH TRIP.—The Anglo-Saxon Petroleum Company’s oil tanker Pleiodon arrived at Auckland yesterday morning from San Pedro with a cargo of over 7.000 tons of benzine for discharge at New Zealand ports. She left San Pedro on June 21, and experienced fine weather for the first part of the voyage. The last week, however, was very rough, and delayed the vessel’s arrival by nearly two days. For two or three days she had to fight her way though strong south-westerly to south-south-
westerly gales and heavy seas, which broke over the ship. Little damage was done, however, and when the gale abated late on Saturday she made good progress, and arrived in port at 1 a.m. yesterday. The local office of the British Imperial Oil Company expects to dispatch the Pleiodon at 10 or 11 a.m. to-morrow in continuation of her voyage to Welllington and Timaru to complete discharge. Captain G. H. Cole is in command of the vessel, and the following are his officers: Chief, Air. J. T. Tattisham: second, Air. J. H. Dawson; third, Air. H. Pearson; chief engineer, Air. D. Ewan; second, Air J. W. Bloomfield; third. Air. 11. AV. Loads; fourth. Air. T. 11. Timstall; fifth, Air. R. Hird; wireless operator, Air. B. AI. Townsend. The Pleiodon was built in 1922 by the Hong' Kong and Whampoa Dock Company. Ltd., and the British Imperial Oil Company are a subsidiary branch of the Anglo-Saxon Petroleum Company. .She is to discharge 2,500 tons of bulk benzine lware.
