RELAY FROM SYDNEY
FINE QUALITIES SHOWN ALL PLANTS RECEIVE WELL The six-valvers, and the spiderhaunted crystal sets reached down from top shelves, all listened-in to the new radio station in Wellington during the week-end. The first broadcast was an unblemished success. The new station pumped its programme out with such power that it was taken up by Farmer’s 2FC station in Sydney and relayed back to New Zealand, where it was heard with perfect clarity. The volume was tremendous and for keeping to its wave length, clarity of tone, and perfect modulation the new station was a revelation. It easily surpassed anything yet heard south of the line. Such was the reception in Austra-
lia that at 8 o’clock Sydney time Farmers announced that it had decided to forego its usual programme and rebroadcast Wellington. This relay was picked up again in New Zealand, so that the listener had the choice of taking Wellington direct or relayed from Sydney. THE SUN’S plant picked up each station. The loud-speaker placed in the studio window gave the programme from Wellington direct to a large crowd which was attracted from Queen Street by the music. One of the curious sounds received from 2YA was the “whoosh” of the flashlight when an inauguration photo was taken. Crystal listeners were not out of it, for during Saturday evening the new station was relayed from IYA.
