50TH ANNIVERSARY OF ST. BARNABAS’S
NEW CHURCH AT MT. EDEN “The memories of old St. Barnabas’s bring back associations of old times, when in the days of our grandparents St. Barnabas’s was the centre of religious and social life in old Auckland, where our people of the Waikato and other districts met in peace the local natives, who had only recently been at war and strife. We wish the church, now in the shadow of Maungawhau, future prosperity and success.” A letter sent by the Tamaki Young Maori Party expressed best wishes for the 50th aninversary of the first church service held in the Mount Eden district, which was celebrated at special services in St. Barnabas’s Church, Mount Eden, yesterday. An outline of the history of the church was given at the morning service by the Rev. G. Gordon Bell. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre had been the mother church of the district, he said, the Church of the Epiphany, Karangahape Road, St. Luke’s Church Mount Albert, and St. Barnabas’s Church having sprung from it.
The first service in the district had been taken by Bishop Cowie and Archdeacon Dudley on July 15. 1877, in a small schoolroom.
Last evening the service was taken by Canon E. J. McFarland.
