CANADA’S EASY WIN AT GISBORNE
LOCAL TEAM OUTCLASSED Press Association. GISBORNE, Saturday. Canada won the toss and attacked immediately, securing a corner five minutes after the game started. Davidson presently beat the defence with a smart shot, which found the net. Canada 1, Poverty Bay 0. Poverty Bay’s defence then stiffened up, Mclvor saving from a strong attack. Roofs collided with Monaghan (Canada), who received minor injuries, occasioning a stoppage of play. Repeated clashes occurred on Poverty Bay’s left wing, with the Canadians generally on top, but Mclvor in goal saved beautifully. Canada’s combination told eventually, Gibson driving a strong shot into the net. Canada 2, Poverty Bay 0.
Clever head work followed, with frequent rallies, Poverty Bay men now having a little more of the game. Graham put his right wing on the- attack, but the ball went out of bounds. In a succeeding offensive Davidson tackled Burry strongly as the latter attempted to clear, and an unsuccessful penalty was given against the visitor. Davidson was sliglitly injured in the tackle, but was able to resume.
Another penalty was given against Canada, but again missed. Canada’s third goal came from a corner, Gibson placing fairly into the goal-mouth, Davidson goaling with a fine piece of head work. Canada 3, Poverty Bay 0. The visitors added their fourth goal from a throw-in near midfield, where Thompson centred to Monaghan, and the centre-half passed the ball straight through Poverty Bay’s centre, beating Burry badly, and registered a good goal. The fifth goal came from Brolly's foot, Burry failing again and appearing to be in trouble with his ankle. Half time: Canada 5 Poverty Bay 0 Resuming, the Canadians were quickly in attack, but Poverty Bay broke through, with Crawley miskicking. Concerted work among the Canadian forwards followed and two corner kicks in succession saw the blues gaining possession after each, but the ball was skied over the goal. The visitors were beaten back to half way, but Gibson and Thompson returned, the former sending a fast shot into the goalmouth for Mclvor to save. Faulty passing by Poverty Bay spoiled a chance of scoring and the pace slowed up considerably. The Canadians had little difficulty in keeping the local representatives on the defensive the greater part of the game, but by faulty passing the home side repeatedly missed opportunities to turn defence into attack. Hair was injured in a collision with Edmunds, and Howarth made a neat run down the left wing. Monk dashing in with a good shot at goal which Tait saved neatly. Another Poverty Bay rally followed, but the blues retaliated with a series of rushes which appeared to lack determination, and each attack was successfully .countered. After repeated rallies around Poverty Bay’s goal, Milligan tapped the ball, to Monaghan, who slipped through the Poverty Bay defence and found the net in great style. Canada 6, Poverty Bay 0. Time after time Canadian shots went over the local goal, and Mclvor saved nicely a couple of times. In a falling light, the game was losing interest through the obvious superiority of the Canadians, who should have scored oil numerous occasions,, but forbore to use their full strength. The. game ended: Canada 6 Poverty Bay . 0
