SHOP HOURS DISPUTE
TROUBLE IN DUNEDIN Press Association. DUNEDIN, Friday. A short time ago the Dunedin Employers’ Association came to an agreement with the Shop Assistants’ Union that the shops should be closed at 9 p.m. on Fridays and 12.30 on Saturdays in lieu of 8.30 p.m. and 1 p.m. respectively as set down in the award.
A difference of opinion, however, has arisen and the employees’ representatives demanded to-day that the shops should be closed at 8.30 p.m. The secretary of the union sent circulars to the employers to the effect that if the shops were not closed at 8.30 p.m. the matter would be reported to the Labour Department.
The employers decided, however, that the shops should be closed at nine o’clock to-night and at 12.30 p.m. tomorrow, according to the previous arrangement. It is not yet certain what arrangement will be made for next Friday.
