OUT FOR GOOD?

ENARE’S BAD KNEE DID NOT RACE AT TRENTHAM PROMISING HURDLER GOES WRONG Enare was taken to Trentham last week to fulfil his hurdle engagements there, but he broke down and was sent home on Thursday. Xot a great success on the flat when raced in the South Island, the Sunny Lake gelding was purchased by the Nelson sportsman, Mr. Tom Newman, better known as the owner of that good filly, Lady Desmond. Enare was handed over to Oney Cox to prepare for hurdling, and the Hawera mentor, as the result of a good deal of perseverance, managed to get the chestnut gelding to the post fit and sound. In his first run Enare ran fourth over sticks, and this was improved upon in his next few starts. MANY SECONDS From this out the «x-Southerner was noted more for the number of seconds he finished in his races over hurdles than for wins. One of his best per-

formances was a dead-heat at "Wanganui a few months back, the horse that kept with him being Santiago—a good hurdler when caught in the right mood. It was only Bowden’s vigorous riding that enabled Enare to divide the stake. Recently Enare was brought to Ellerslie for the Great Xorthern meeting. On the opening day he did not show up in a hack hurdle event and it was apparent that, like a good many other horses brought here from other places, he failed to handle the bad ground and the reverse way of galloping. SECOND TO GOOD ONE In his next run at Ellerslie, in a twomile open hurdles, Enare gave a much improved showing, finishing second to Royal Form, the latter winning very easily. The journey was two miles, and the going bad, so it was not a bad effort for a promoted hack hurdler. That form was good, for Royal Form ran second to Wharncliffe on Tuesday in the Trentham Hurdles, and handled with better judgment might have beaten him. Enare went to Riccarton for the last Cup carnival, and in his first start there won over the sticks most convincingly

and created a big impression. He was beaten in his next start at the Southern centre, but he was said to have been interfered with and fell. It is to be hoped that an afflicted knee will not prevent Enare from gaining further successes on the turf, but there is cause for doubt.
