PUZZLED GARDENERS
ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS The following answers to correspondents from the Garden Editor did not appear in Saturday’s issue of THE SUN: VIOLET, Onehu nga.—Your idea regarding turning the waste space into profit is quite a good one. My advice before you begin is to find out first where you can place them. Consult any of the advertisers on this page and see if there is a ready market. (1) Certainly plant the whole plot in violets if you can dispose of them, but on inquiring you may find the market glutted. Plant early October. (2) I'ou have time to plant a crop before the violet season starts. The following are always saleable: Carnations, stocks, poppies, sweet peas. (3) Iris Tingitana if planted the first year sometimes do not flower until the following season. If they are old clumps lift and bake in the sun during the late summer and autumn. P.D., Onehunga.—Lime is a wonderful tonic for the soil, and if possible procure the air-slaked roche or burnt lime. This is much stronger and cheaper in the end. One sack is equal to three sacks of carbonate of lime or shell lime, which is only crushed shell. Apply just before setting tlie crop mentioned. Lime releases the natural manures in the soil, which are wasted unless there is a crop ready to absorb them. J.R., Devonport.—Thank you for your kind remarks about our column. It is a privilege to be able to help any of our readers at any time.
