Bobby Jones Beats All Records
BRITISH GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP

Reed. 1.10 p.m. LONDON, Friday. THERE was the most wonderful A scene of enthusiasm witnessed on any golf-course in the world when Bobby Jones holed the putt that made him the British open champion. No amateur has ever before won the championship for two years in succession, and it is 20 years since the feat was performed by, the professional James Braid. Moreover, Jones beat the record for the championship (291) by six strokes. Twelve thousand spectators fought for places round the green, and Jones had to force his way through. Directly he holed, the people swept in and obliterated the turf. Jones looked in vain for an avenue of escape, but there was none, and he was carried off shoulder high.
Eventually he was rescued by the police. The outstanding feature of the play was unquestionably his driving, in which the stupendous average of 275 yards was maintained through the round. He drove dead straight. Some of his shots were prodigious, one at the second hole, which measures 401yds, being so long that it required only a spade mashie for the approach shot. Kirkwood might have beaten Boomer if he had not poked jerkily at four short putts. Other scores were:— A. Herd 300 J. Barnes 301 A. Compston 303 J. Braid 306 E. Ray 306 G. Tweedale 306 O. Tolley 307 R. Harris 307 L. Nettleford and A. V. G. Seymour were last with 318.
