SPEED KINGS

FOUR TRIBES GREAT AMERICAN STRAIN MOST SUCCESSFUL CROSSES Notwithstanding the numerous trotting families that exist in the United States, recent years have demonstrated that the majority of champion pacers and trotters come from only four tribes. They are Axworthy 2.151, McKinney 2.11! Peter the Great 2.72, and Binoen 2.6 j. J Little is heard of the pacing bred pacing family known as the Hals, the reason, no doubt, being the desire on the part of the Americans to breed trotters. It is known that pacers with the American people are unpopular and even the trainers have an edge on them. And so it is to these circumstances that the trotting families have made such phenomenal progress. A GREAT RECORD Out of the list of 109 sires tabulated by the statistician of the American • Horse Review." as being entitled to prominence as progenitors, no fewer than 68 are descendants of the four great families mentioned. Their preponderance in other tables of successful sires was similar. During last season Bingen dominated the list. All told 157 of his sons sired winners; the number of members of the Bingen family tree to salute the judge being 633. They won 1,483 races, the total stake money of which was 624 610 dollars (£124.922). Peter the Great had 102 sons successful in siring winners, the total number of performers being 499, they winning 1,151 contests, the total earnings of -which were 689,362 dollars £137,872). Next comes Axworthy with 55 descendants as sires of 248 winning horses whose efforts during 1926-1927 resulted in their collecting 636 events Fourth honours go to McKinney, 58 of his sons siring 235 winners of 560 races. HIGH CLASS QUARTETTE This quartette of tribes has furnished 1,615 different winners of trotting and pacing races in the United States and Canada during the year 1926, which won 2,830 different races of which the gross value in stake and purse money was 2,147,237 dollars (£429,447). For some time many trainers • have regarded the Axtvorthy—Peter the Great combinations as the leading blood lines in the trotting world, but last year the Bingen—McKinney cross again exerted its superiority, and so definitely have these blood lines proved successful in the production of fast, good gaited, good headed, game racehorses that the breeding experts have now come to accept that the McKinney —Bingen cross is as big a success as the Axworthy—Peter the Great combination is.
