IN WINTRY WEATHER
SPLENDID SPORT AT TRENTHAM
NUKUMAI SHOWS GOOD FORM
(Special to THE SUE.) WELLINGTON, To-day. WINTRY weather prevailed for the second day of the Wellington Winter fixture. Under the trying circumstances the attendance was good. The going was heavy. The totalisator handled £39,053, against £46,680 for the corresponding day last year. The outstanding performances were those of Naknmai, in the Parliamentary Handicap, and King Lu in the Members’ Handicap.
Auckland Horseman Suspended For careless riding in the Parliamentary Handicap, S. Henderson was suspended for the remainder of the season. The inquiry into interference by Rowley with Te Kuvvana in the Te Aro Handicap on the first day was concluded, R. S. Bagby, rider of Rowley, being warned as to his riding in future. Aberfeldy Makes Amends In the opening event, the Corunna Hurdles, Bonena £732 and Potoanui £521 disputed favouritism. York Abbey and Bevis at once went out to cut each others throats, and over the second hurdle they were well clear of Lady Passenger, Aberfeldy, Inferno, Joyeuse, Peshwa, Potoanui and Bonena. At the six furlongs, Bevis retired, leaving Aberfeldy and York Abbey in the van, with Inferno, Bevis, Potoanui, Lady Passenger and Bonena following. Crossing the top Aberfeldy took charge and showed the way for home from Potoanui, Kaikahu, G uncase, Bonena and Vexatious, the remainder being a long way back. Once straightened up, Aberfeldy soon ran clear, and the full brother to Wedding March went on to win by two lengths from Kaikahu* and Vexatious, there being a neck between the latter pair. Potoanui was again fourth, and Bonena, Guncase, Peshwa, Lady Passenger and Inferno were the next to finish. Smart Performance All went out for the Maiden Handicap, and the Fordell representative, Avro, was again installed favourite, being-entrusted with £896, as against Gerf £542, Duke Abbey £532, and Waltzer £520. The first to become prominent was flitter, but running to the course proper several were in the picture, notably Subdivision, Duke Abbey, Waltzer, Cerf, Oratrix and Avro. At the false rail, Subdivision had a good lead, and then Duke Abbey went after him. Subdivision weakened over the last furlong, leaving Duke Abbey to complete a smart effort with a margin of three lengths. Waltzer was four lengths further back, just ahead of a bunch comprising Avro, Cerf, Arrow Boy and Tameterangi. Duke Abbey, like the winner of the first race, also claimed Quin Abbey as his sire. Southerner’s Finish Peho £l,OlO, Rowley £979, Romantic £742 and Bronstell £615 was how they were backed for the Seatoun Handicap, in which there were eight runners. Rahepoto, Rowley, Wild Work, Bronstell, Romantic and Peho was the order at the end of the first furlong, and there was little between the lot of them crosing the top. Rahepoto was still in the van as they turned for home, Rowley, Bronstell, Romantic, Peho and Royal Head following. Romantic was in charge at the distance, when Peho and Royal Head put in their claims, the former beating the other Southerner by half a length, with Romantic third, a length and a-half away. Rowley was a close fourth, and Bronstell, Wild "Work, Rahepoto and Sir Monent followed in that order. Taitaiata Wins Well Sir Wai was withdrawn from the Second Hack Steeplechase, Hokioi £l,OlO being heavily supported, Maidos £561, being the only other backed to any extent. Maidos was in the van for the greater part of the journey, being attended past the stands at the end of the first circuit by Hokioi, Kirkwood, The Curragh, Comedy Prince and Taitaiata. Six furlongs from home the leader was beaten, Hokioi going to the front, while Taitaiata was making up a lot of ground. The two last named w r ere on terms running to the final obstacle, Taitaiata doing best from this out, and went on to win by five lengths. Kirkwood was 20 lengths back, and Maidos and The Curragh next in order. Comedy Prince fell at the second to last fence. Nukumai Again Fifteen saddled up for the Parliamentary Handicap, and in a big pool Chickwheat £1,014, Nukumai £968, Black Mint £528, and Mint Leaf £509 was the order of the betting. A walking-up start saw the horses on the outside get the worst, and Master Doon got a fly. He was soon clear and crossed right over from twelfth position to the rails, leading round the bend from Shining Armour, Queen Arch, Nukumai. Royal Mint. Black Mint, Chickwheat and T resham. Entering the back stretch there was practically no change in the order of the leading division, and they held their positions almost to the home turn, where Master Doon was a length in front of Shining Armour, with Nukumai, Alio way, Ngata, Queen Arch, Black Mint and Merry Damon following in that order. Once straightened up, Nukumai began to draw up, and a furlong from the judge he went away to score in most convincing fashion by three lengths. Alloway, Master Doon and Shining Armour were separated by heads only, and the next to finish were Merry Damon, Lord Star, Ngata and Queen Arch. Two Surprises There was a big turn-up in the Highweight Handicap, the well backed division being routed. Passionate £762. Mister Gamp £643 and Beau Cavalier £SBB carried the money, while the dividend payers carried £193 and £205 respectively. Going out of the straight the order was Gold Rain, Glenidle, Merle, Mister Gamp, Outfit, Gauntlet and Royal Abbey, but at the seven furlongs Beau Cavalier ran to the front from Gold Rain, Merle, Royal Abbey, Brigadier Bill, San Pedro and Fairy Tidings, the last-named making a run crossing the top. Beau Cavalier led into the straight from Merle, Fairy Tidings, Mister
Gamp, Closefire and Passionate, but as soon as they straightened up Fairy Tidings quickly hit the front and then cleared out from her opponents, going on to win hollowly by ten lengths. Closefire was half a length ahead of San Pedro, and the next to finish were Beau Cavalier, Passionate, Brigadier Bill, Merle and Mister Gamp. King Lu Pleases Gaillard was the only withdrawal from the Members’ Handicap, for which King Lu was favourite, being entrusted with £1,123, while others fairly well backed were Solrose £761, Sun Up £682 and Fairy Herald £5Bl. When they had settled down Gold Box, Royal Game, Oration, Delightmen t, Whenuanui, Sun Up and Fairy Herald were prominent, with very little separating them, and they came to the course proper in this order, with King Lu a long way back in the early par?. _ .^ VtlT i s , for a . n o P G ning on the rails the false rail, Delightment was in the van, but there were several coming at him. & At the furlong: post King- Lu ranged alongside, while Solrose, Oration and hind Hupana were in a line, just beThen the favourite went away to win by a length and a-half from Miss for P seconT d Solrose ’ who dead-heated They were followed home by Deiightfairy Herald.
