A RANGER’S POWERS

GAMING LAW BREACHES

To date an Auckland Acclimatisation Society ranger has been all-powerful in regard to issuing summonses for breaches of the gaming laws. The society had no control over his actions. Last evening the council decided on a slight modification of these powers. On the motion of Mr. Drysdale, the following resolution, of which notice had been given, was carried: “The ranger may prosecute in simple cases, but in all doubtful and complicated oases or technical breaches, he must consult with the council’s solicitor who, in turn, should he be in doubt, should consult the council." Tbe council’s reason for relegating full power to the ranger was that prior to the passing of the original motion, when prosecutions were pending, members were inundated with requests to have proceedings stayed.
