Prince of Wales Presents Trophy To Maori Players
Silver Cup for Competition Among Maori Rugby Teams Press Association. WELLINGTON, Thursday. At the request of the late Sir James Carrol, the Prime Minister, the Pet. Hon. J. G. Coates, when in England, conveyed a request from the natives that the Prince of Wales should honour them by presenting a trophy for competition among the Maori Rugby teams in New Zealand. The Prince assented, and gave a silver cup as well as a medal for each member of the native team that toured England. His Excellency the Governor-Gen-eral will present these medals in Wellington about August 19. The Maori Advisory Board suggests that the Prince’s Cup should be made a leading trophy for Maori teams —the Te Mori Rose Bowl and French Union’s Cup going along with it. The cup, in fact, will become for the Maoris what the Ranfurly Shield is for Europeans. The competition will begin next year.
